Timeless season 2 spoilers: Is Lucy’s mother main villain? (SDCC 2017)

One of the panels at Comic-Con this year we were most excited to hear about was for Timeless season 2, and for good reason. After all, the show at one point was dead in the water before it was revived by NBC — this was apparently a surprise to both creators Shawn Ryan and Eric Kripke, yet alone everyone else in the cast.

The first thing that we have to report on here is the only bit of bad news that we’ve got: Our hopes of a season 2 this fall in the place of the delayed Taken are shot. The show’s writers room doesn’t even open until September, so with that, there’s no way new episodes will be on the air until 2018.

Ready to move forward? Well, let’s talk for a minute about Lucy’s mom, given that she is going to be one of the main villains. Per TVLine, here is what Kripke had to say on the subject:

“Lucy’s mom [played by Susanna Thompson] is going to be one of the major Big Bads … And Rittenhouse does have their hands on the time machine. That’s way worse than Garcia having his hands on the time machine. Garcia and the [time] team find themselves facing a common enemy.”

Getting to see more of Thompson on season 2 is obviously something that we’re going to celebrate, especially now that we’re wondering whether or not she knows so much more about Lucy’s time-travel than she’s let on. Does she actually know what happened to Lucy’s sister, and what does Rittenhouse have planned now? The idea of Flynn teaming up with the Time Team could be fun, just because of the tension and discord that is obviously there. We don’t foresee them being buddies, but it turns out that Flynn was right about the two having more of a common opponent than they first realized.

Beyond just this, the Timeless team made it clear that there are fewer plans for them to go to the future, largely because the show flourishes exploring elements of the past. We also understand this given that in the past, everything is certain. Once you do start to dive into the future, then you run the risk of making things super complicated and creating all sorts of bizarre crises that you can find in Legends of Tomorrow, Doctor Who, and other shows. Combining science fiction and historical drama is something that the show does best.

Do we want to know more about Timeless season 2? Of course we do, but we also realize that there’s no sense in getting overly greedy now. After all, we’ve already learned so much more about the season than we anticipated that we would in advance.
