Absentia spoilers: A look within Jack Byrne’s soul
Think of the new photo below, as first posted by the show’s official Twitter account, as another way to look within at what is going on with Emily’s brother Jack Byrne (Neil Jackson). He brings to this show a very interesting vibe, and also a perspective that is far and away different from what we will see with Emily’s former husband Nick Durand (Patrick Heusinger). He’s had that long-term relationship with Emily that dates back decades, he thought he understood her, and his connection is one that never dissipates. They’re bound by blood.
Still, when the show first picks up, it’s certainly possible that Jack will have done everything that he can to move on after thinking that Emily (played of course by Stana Katic) is dead and has been for some time. This could be in part what this photo, with the accompanying caption, is about. If you put your heart into something, it is very difficult to have regrets. Jack knows presumably that he did everything that he could to find Emily, and in the aftermath of her presumed death, his life will have greatly changed from where it was beforehand.
Watching how Jack evolves over this season should prove every bit as interesting as watching what transpires with Nick. When they realize that Emily is alive, it has a profound impact on the two of them. It would have to, given that we are talking about such a shocking and life-altering twist. They don’t have to move on from her anymore, but they also are more than likely questioning whether or not they can ever recapture any of the magic of their past. For Nick, it’s obviously very different given that he is now married to Alice (Cara Theobold) and the two of them are raising Nick and Emily’s son Flynn. He can’t have the same dynamic that he had with her without completely devastating the life that he has since built. For Jack, meanwhile, this change may actually be a bit easier since less about his present circumstance changes with Emily back in the picture.
Absentia will premiere in select territories this fall. There’s still no word of an American TV home, but for now, our plans are to cover the Canadian version airing on Showcase.
