Chicago PD season 5: Jon Seda returning as series regular
Today, NBC confirmed the news that the former Chicago PD series regular will be back after leaving the show to join the offshoot Chicago Justice. With that show now canceled, Seda is getting a chance to head back home to play alongside some of his former cast members. Here is what super-producer Dick Wolf had to say on the subject:
“It’s a pleasure to have Jon back on Chicago P.D. … We have been working together for more than 20 years, and I hope there are many more to come.”
Seda’s return comes after the departure of original series star Sophia Bush, who left the show earlier this summer in what was a fairly sudden announcement. There is no word as of yet if she’ll return to wrap up Erin Lindsay’s story, but that is something that many fans definitely want to see – us included. There are way too many dangle threads with her character to not have her come back for an episode or two at least to give viewers a proper goodbye, so we are praying to the TV Gods for this to happen.
The questions now for Antonio
The biggest one we’ve got is simply this: Why is he coming back? In terms of keeping Seda on board the franchise, this is an easy one to answer. He’s extremely well-liked, a fan favorite, and nobody wanted him gone from the franchise. It’s harder to justify it for Antonio since he had such a great position alongside Laura Nagel in the State’s Attorney’s office. Intelligence is a very stressful job, and the perception was that getting the new gig was forward movement for his character.
On the flip side, one of the biggest things to be psyched about here is that this furthers along the possibility of Brett / Antonio. This relationship has a devoted following, and while we’re not sure it will come back to the forefront just yet, we hope that it can. The more crossover romances the franchise can do that make sense, the better. You don’t want to force them, but there was something about these two characters together that was really fun and got people excited to watch. A part of that may just be that they are opposites in some ways, but when they come together they bring out a boldness that they don’t often get to explore alone.
New episodes of Chicago PD will air on NBC starting in September (the 27th to be exact). Beyond this news, the only other things confirmed is that there is a new showrunner in Rick Eid, and that Marina Squerciati is going to be returning as Kim Burgess after taking maternity leave in the spring. With Chicago Med not returning until midseason, that may delay any plans to do some sort of huge crossover event. This year, it’s possible that these could be a little more small-scale.
