Big Brother 19 interview: Allison Grodner on Christmas’ injury, Den of Temptation
With so much chaos, you have to imagine that this was also an eventful week for executive producer Allison Grodner. In our weekly email Q&A (read the one from last week here), she explains how Christmas was cleared to return to the game, contingency plans for surprise exits, and also what they look for in twists like the Den of Temptation.
CarterMatt – How big of a concern was Christmas’ injury behind the scenes, and what was the process like ensuring that she was okay to re-enter the game?
Allison Grodner – Obviously, we are concerned when any houseguest is injured and want to do what is best for their health and safety. In 19 seasons of the show we have had minimal injuries and have never had anyone injured so badly that they had to leave the game. This is the first broken bone on Big Brother. Ultimately, it came down to a doctor saying that she was medically stable enough to return and her choice [was] to come back in and compete.
Did losing Megan this early in the game alter your plans for the season, or do you always have contingencies and flexibility as things happen in the house?
The only way we like to lose houseguests is through the front door on eviction night, but unexpected things happen and we are always prepared for that possibility.
The Den of Temptation proved to be a huge deal in the game this week. How did you and the team go about devising the right temptations and curses to go along with them?
A lot of thought and creativity go into game twists. We wanted to make sure that the temptations and curses were big enough to affect the game in a fun and dramatic way but not to completely alter the basic Big Brother game. After 19 seasons we want to create twists that the houseguests will never see coming and it was fun to come up with game pieces that have not been seen before.

I agree with Matt Carter in that if she wants to stay in the game and her recovery isn’t jeopardized, then she should stay. However if someone broke a foot on Survivor, I’m sure a return wouldn’t have been allowed.
There were other questions that Matt could have asked but didn’t. I’m not sure if Allison Grodner would have answered them anyway.
One question is insurance. I read one fan say that each player had to have their own insurance before Big Brother let them participate. Is it true that Christmas’ insurance paid for her visit to the doctors?
A second question is whether Christmas’ injury and her stay in the game required the producers to change the schedule of competitions so that for the next few weeks, all the competitions don’t involve running. If Christmas lasts through the entire season, then how would the producers replace the competitions that involve running?

She should have been taken out of the game, but she is a well known personality. So she got to make her own call. I dislike many of the cast members this year. She is one of them. I have watched bb all 19 years, and this year is going like the season derrick won. All the pretty girls, as they call themselves, is rub the guys, like christine did cody. Paul is running this season, so if the newbies dont get their acts together, they are all going to give the money away to a vet that doesnt even need it.a bunch of idiots this year.

Also christmas doesnt need themoney and america gave her the temptation, so i guess i am the only american that thinks she is so full of herself that she deserved to be on the show , she cant even compete. All she does is have these long a** covos with these grown a** men on national tv getting them to cry. Really, she is so annoying, i do not watch her at all.

She can’t compete in challenges, she should be taken out. Also if she needs surgery she for sure should be removed.

I get the thinking — I’m just probably sympathetic to her as someone who’s been on a reality show with a broken bone. If you feel like you can take part, it’s better than having to recover at home.

Most of the HG I can see staying but Christmas foot healing properly is very important to her career. If I were her I would consider the quality of recovery and her rehab doctor carefully. I moved cross country for my husband’s job right after orthro surgery and my west coast and East coast doctor disagreed about treatment an it was a mess.

Good Article. At least we got some insight what was happening behind the scenes.

A question I would want to ask was how was Cody able to keep nominating people but in earlier season after someone left that the persons hoh was over
