Before Sherlock season 5, Dracula is up for Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss

Sherlock season 4

Following his time on Doctor Who season 10, Steven Moffat is teaming with Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss for another new project! Once again, this one is taking on another familiar property in Dracula.

According to a new report coming in right now via Variety, Moffat and Gatiss are teaming up in order to work on this adaptation with Sue Vertue and the Hartswood Films banner — basically, the same exact team as with Sherlock. The format is even going to be the same, with each “season” comprising of a few mini-movies lasting around an hour and a half in length. There is no confirmed network for the first season just yet, but it’s looking as though The BBC has interest (which makes sense given that Sherlock has been an enormous hit for them all over the world).

Of course, it’s a tremendously smart idea for Gatiss and Moffat to work together again given that they’ve shown time and time again now that the two parties are rather brilliant at it. Also, it helps that Dracula is one of the most iconic literary figures out there in history. The big issue they may run into is that this is a character that’s been done so many times over on television, but you can make that same argument about a wide array of other characters prominently featured in pop culture these days, including Sherlock Holmes himself! Therefore, it shouldn’t be interpreted as unusual at all that this character is getting some time in the spotlight at this point. With the right team, there may be a way to breathe a little more life into a character who is ironically undead.

In the end, the success of this show could just come down to if Moffat and Gatiss are able to find an actor with the chops necessary in order to play Dracula, because if they don’t have that, then they have nothing. We’ve seen some really bad Dracula’s on television over the years as well as a few good ones (like on Penny Dreadful).

As a reminder, Moffat and Gatiss are not ruling out a Sherlock season 5, but it is not something that they are actively planning at this time. If there is some further news that comes out on the subject of the show, we will have it for you over at the link here. (Photo: BBC One.)
