Doctor Who season 10 finale spoilers: John Simm, Michelle Gomez returning
The photo above confirms that you will get a chance to see the former Master for the first time in years in the upcoming “The Doctor Falls.” Not only that, but Michelle Gomez will be joining him! This is the first time in show history that there were two different Masters in the same episode. It’s almost a little bit like the 50th anniversary special “The Day of the Doctor,” but more evil given that in this instance, The Doctor will have to fight multiple enemies with help only from Nardole and Bill Potts. His hands are going to be full, and the future of all humanity is in jeopardy.
Given that this is the final regular episode of the series for showrunner Steven Moffat, he’s probably going to pull out all of the stops. It’s going to run a little bit longer than the standard episode (which tends to go around 50 minutes), but that’s not a shock given that the past two finales also have run a little bit closer to a full hour. It’s simply a function of there being more story and imagination that needs to be thrown in.
When you look at the run time and the stakes for this episode, you do also have to wonder if there is going to be any room left open now at all for big things in the Christmas Special. Personally, we’d almost prefer there to be something a little more introspective and intimate about that special as you see this Doctor more near the end of his life, knowing that the regeneration is coming and having to prepare further for it. This is one of the things that Matt Smith’s final episode executed so brilliantly. He was aware of his own mortality in a way that was deeply moving, especially in those final scenes when you got to see the return of Karen Gillan as the character of Eleven was sent off on his way to becoming Twelve. (Should Jenna Coleman return for the Christmas Special as Clara Oswald? Hopefully, that is something that is going to be considered.)
