Ratings: America’s Got Talent, World of Dance have monster premieres
The first numbers from Tuesday are in after a ratings delay, and they are excellent news for both of these reality shows. First, America’s Got Talent held fairly steady with a 2.6, proving further just what sort of interest there is out there for family-friendly entertainment that brings every emotion out of you. NBC has done a great job over the years of not over-saturating the market with this show, and it shows with the results.
Even though we expected AGT to start off the season with more than a 2.0, initial projects here was that it’d be lucky to get a 2.2 or so in this climate. Aren’t surprises fun?
The bigger surprise – Given that ratings struggles for So You Think You Can Dance, who predicted that World of Dance would get a 2.4, keeping almost the entirety of its lead-in? This is a fantastic start to the Jennifer Lopez hosted competition as it tries to become a summer staple in its own right. It’s certainly performed better through one episode than many TV efforts featuring Lopez and Derek Hough have in the demo as of late, even though they’ve both been a part of other hits.
With that said … it’s only one episode, and the expectation here is that this rating will drop to around a 2.0 at least next week. While the talent in the premiere was exceptional, the show was a little too manufactured and didn’t have the same sort of lighthearted spirit to it that America’s Got Talent does. It could use a little bit more of a sense of humor about itself, and hopefully this is something that it figures out more and more as the season progresses.
Other odds and ends – The Prison Break revival did manage to improve its ratings up to a 0.9 for its final episode, while iZombie held on reasonably well with a 0.3 given that there was no lead-in courtesy of The Flash. It’s coming back for another season, not that it really matters all that much anyway.
