Saturday Night Live music: Katy Perry performs ‘Swish Swish,’ ‘Bon Appetit’

Tonight, Katy Perry was the musical guest for Saturday Night Live, and it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that NBC went big at the end of the season. She’s currently promoting some new music, so it makes sense for her to have this venue just as it makes a great deal of sense for the producers to want her on the show at this point. She has an opportunity to draw viewers, and even show up in a sketch or two.

So what was her first song on the night? Think along the lines of “Swish Swish,” one of her new singles and a song already getting a ton of conversation in the news cycle at the moment. While Perry insists that no song on her album is inspired by one person, many are viewing this as a response to “Bad Blood,” one of the Taylor Swift’s recent hits. (Perry and Swift have had a feud-of-sorts bubbling under the surface for quite a long time.)

One of the things that you do have to give Perry credit for with this song is that musically, she’s not trying to do the same thing that she’s done on so many times in the past. This isn’t your typical pop anthem. At the same time, this is probably one of those songs that needs three or four listens before you start to get hooked on it, given that it doesn’t have an easy hook in the way that many of her other songs do. This one is somewhat scattershot, and the performance was unusual (to say the least) with all of the dancers and the sheer number of people on the stag.e

If you love Perry, you probably loved this. Otherwise, you may be confused.

Second song – Perry came out with one of her other recent hits in “Bon Appetit,” a song that has inspired a rather racy music video already — the lyrics themselves are definitely suggestive in their own right. The staging for the performance here was fairly impressive, as was Perry’s ability to perform without interruption despite singing lying down, standing up, and in a variety of other uncomfortable positions. The one weak point of the performance is that it seemed like there were plenty of people on the stage who didn’t know what they were supposed to be doing.
