World of Dance trailer: See new Jennifer Lopez – Derek Hough NBC show
This new trailer (via Us Weekly) effectively does a good job of establishing what the dance competition is, how it works, and the way that different dancers and dance crews will be battling to win the title of the Best in the World. It’s a very ambitious contest given that you are encompassing so much more than just one single style or type of dancer. For example, Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance is all about an individual performer, whereas America’s Got Talent often does feature groups in a part of its overall hodgepodge. This show really seems to be open to almost any style and method of dancing, and in some ways, that is tremendously exciting. Yet, we do still think that the show has its work cut out for it trying to stand out in an incredibly competitive reality competition field where there are so many other choices out there for people in the event they want to watch something else.
Beyond the dances themselves, this show also is trying to make some traction with its judging panel. Jennifer Lopez has a dance background and a history on NBC thanks to Shades of Blue; meanwhile, Derek Hough is one of the most-popular pros from Dancing with the Stars and has a fan following all his own. Ne-Yo is a little bit of a surprise choice, but Jenna Dewan-Tatum as the host feels especially inspired given that she comes from dance and she didn’t even need to given that she’s not judging anything.
This could be a show with some promise, and if nothing else, NBC isn’t making an enormous commitment to it. By putting it on the air for the summer, they are giving this a shot; if it works, they can keep it or even move it to a more lucrative time of the year. If it bombs, it’ll be fairly easy to forget that it ever happened.
