Britain’s Got Talent review: Reuben Gray, Jonny Awsum, Gao Lin, Liu Xin

Tonight, Britain’s Got Talent brought you the second episode of the season, which afforded a wide array of opportunities for entertainment. We had a whole lot of “variety,” and also a lot of rubbish … including an act from a guy who was actually named Simon Cowell.

Now that we’ve said that, there were also some acts with some legitimate talent as well. We’re going to focus for the most part here on some of the quality acts who we saw over the course of the night.

Goa Lin and Liu Xin – They are extraordinary, but one of the interesting things about them here is that they’ve already got a significant history on the Got Talent franchise. They are a former Golden Buzzer act from the Asian show. We don’t mind them being here — their talent is extraordinary, and it’s not like a good 95% of the show’s viewership will be familiar with their dance / acrobatics.

Charley Dyson – Charley’s got some guts wanted to come on the show to do a ton of scooter tricks. At first, we weren’t all that impressed … then he started doing some of the flips. Then, he dabbed at the end! Not bad for a kid who wasn’t even ten years old.

Issy Simpson – We spotlighted her before the show as a brilliant kid magician, and she proved her mettle here. We’ve seen various on some of her tricks before, but this was still incredible for her age. She also really seemed to enjoy it, which you don’t always get with kid performers.

John & Brandon – It’s a father/son tap act! This was classy and cute, mostly with how in-sync the two guys were with some of their moves. There may not be a whole lot of upside here, but it’s still something that puts a smile on your face.

Reuben Gray – We were having so much fun, and then serious Reuben and his piano had to come in and make us all emotional. Luckily, this was a good emotional since this was a really good performance. Lots of emotion and passion from start to finish, and he hit all of the notes we wanted from him.

Just Us – The group had a pretty powerful story, but beyond that there was a personality and meaning behind why they were dancing. One of our problems with young dance crews is that there’s no real emotional connection to them. This one was different. They received Alesha Dixon’s Golden Buzzer! Read more here.

Jonny Awsum – This was incredibly silly, but the comedian’s stage show was completely spontaneous and really fun. We do think that he’s got James Corden upside of being the sort of guy who can make people laugh at just the drop of a hat.
