Longmire season 6 episode 2: Lou Diamond Phillips begins directing
In a post on Twitter this past Friday, Lou Diamond Phillips confirmed that he is already starting up work on episode 2, otherwise known as the episode in which he is directing. This is the first time he’s taken on this role for Longmire (though he’s done it in the past), and we’re certainly curious to see precisely how much on Henry Standing Bear you’re going to see in the midst of the episode with him taking on this added challenge to go along with it.
Granted, in order to see Henry, we still have to see whether or not he ends up surviving the events of the end of season 5 … though we’re optimistic that somehow, he will. This show’s put many characters in difficult situations before, and other than poor Branch, a lot of them have turned out to emerge on the other side in one piece. Fingers crossed that the same happens for Henry, who’s been at the mercy of Malachi Strand following his own quest for revenge.
Given that Phillips’ episode is the second one this season, it’s hard to speculate much else on the story beyond everything that we saw at the end of season 5. If it’s like past second episodes, we figure that it will be tasked with that difficult balancing act of figuring out a way to pay tribute to everything that came before in the premiere, while further establishing and paying off some of the story that still could be coming up. Given that this is also the final season of Longmire, you have to figure that there will be an added focus on legacy, and establishing a through-line that goes all the way from the premiere to the finale. You have to be able to set up and establish what you want your ending to be. You don’t want to give it away, but you do want to start planting the seeds so when that ending does roll around, you can look at it and say beyond the shadow of a doubt that it makes sense.
