Ratings: Renewal odds for The Blacklist: Redemption season 2 — at present

The Blacklist: Redemption season 2

Given that Thursday night proved itself to be a quiet night in terms of television ratings, let’s focus in on one show that’s had a good audience here at the site in The Blacklist: Redemption. The show had some promise based on the potential, but there was an immediate hurdle that it had to try and overcome — the fact that the original Blacklist wasn’t exactly pulling in great numbers. In order to have a good shot, the series starring Ryan Eggold and Famke Janssen needed to pull in around 90% of the flagship show’s audience.

So far, that hasn’t quite happened. The fifth episode of the season last night drew a 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is tied for the show’s lowest rating to date. So far in the live+same day metric, the spin-off is averaging around a 0.8 rating in the demo. Meanwhile, The Blacklist proper is averaging close to a 1.1. That’s not exactly 90% retention. It’s not terrible given that some spin-offs have even lower retention, but as we noted, there was a smaller threshold here.

If you’re thinking here in terms of pure numbers, there’s not a huge chance for The Blacklist: Redemption season 2 happening. NBC may think that there are better uses to fill a few weeks in their Thursday schedule. If there is one silver lining / opportunity here, though, it may be this — if The Blacklist comes back (which still feels somewhat likely, given how terribly this timeslot’s fared with other shows), there is a chance that they opt for more Redemption to fill room in the schedule. A 0.8 rating is better than generating repeats, though we do think it’ll create more creative challenges with Tom continuing to go off away from his wife and child for a stretch of time every season.

NBC does still have some time to consider if they want a Blacklist: Redemption season 2. Specifically, they’ve got until May. We figure that they’ll come up with what they want to do by around that time, and it’ll be exciting to see that decision play out in the event that Redemption recovers slightly and puts the network in a tricky spot.
