KCAs 2017: Demi Lovato gets slimed, Zendaya wins, Ellen DeGeneres, and more

KCAs 2017 -

The KCAs 2017 are airing tonight on Nickelodeon, and there are of course a few different highlights that will appeal to some of the various youngsters watching at home.

For one, you’ve got slime — and plenty of it, not that anyone should be surprised given that this really is at the core of what this show is all about. People get slimed! It happens, and it happens often. You just have to be prepared for it if you’re going to be coming on this show. Tonight, it happened to Demi Lovato, and we give her all the credit in the world for being a part of it following some lengthy Smurfs product placement. The one thing that seems to be a unifying trait about slime is rather simple: It’s cold. VERY cold. We also imagine that it’s very hard to clean, so even further credit has to go to the people who want to deal with it from that vantage point.

As for a few other notable elements of the show, you had Zendaya and Ellen DeGeneres both coming up and accepting trophies — while trying to deliver some empowering messages in the process. This seems to be one of the big unifying themes for this year more than anything else — trying to bring people together in any way possible. This means at times messages of inspiration, or it means at other peoples just having a good laugh. When you’re speaking to kids, you do have to often figure out the best way to present the message without making it look in the process like you’re burdening them with a lot of information that they’re not ready to hear.

In general, we do think that product-placement is a little crazy with this show, just as we always wonder if all of the kids watching know who some of the people are like John Cena and Nikki Bella. What if you’re not a WWE fan? The show is probably most appealing just for people wanting to see a few laughs and some of their favorite people get slimed — to be fair, we used to love the KCAs as a kid. It’s just painfully obvious now as a thirty-year old writer that we are starting to lose touch with so much of what the kids are watching these days.
