Will America’s Next Top Model cycle 24 happen? Talking renewal hopes
The question that we have to ponder over, first and foremost, is one referenced in the title: Will cycle 24 even happen? Is there enough gas left in the series’ tank? The show got off to a very impressive start with a rebooted presence, a new network in VH1, and a panel that included Rita Ora and Ashley Graham. Unfortunately, not too long after that things started to go a bit more off the rails. The show made a move to Wednesday nights that was seemingly devised to give it a better lead-in and stronger ratings, but since making said move, it’s lost consistently more viewers — the same goes for the 18-49 demographic. While we do think that the show is definitely worth bringing back for another go, maybe it’s not a slam dunk in the way that it once was.
The thing about this show is that it’s such an institution in the reality TV world, and there are always aspiring models. Even if it does go away for a year or two, it can easily come back with new people and a new style. The biggest thing that it has to do is continue to find ways to modernize and be edgy in 2017. Getting it on VH1 was a good start, since that made it a little bit easier for the show to take some risks and push the envelope far more than they did back when they were on The CW.
As for when we expect VH1 to make a decision, there’s no firm timetable; yet, we imagine that they will decide within a few months if the goal for them is to try and keep the panel of people that they have. The longer that they wait when it comes to this, the more likely that it is that these people go off and do other things and they’re left to get the show an entirely new identity all over again. That is so much harder than it seems given that shows like this are about chemistry more so than whether or not you’re a big name.
