Saturday Night Live: Will Donald Trump ‘wiretap’ claims make Octavia Spencer show?
One of the questions that we certainly know many fans out there to have is whether or not the show could take on everything that President Trump said about Barack Obama allegedly tapping into his phones many months ago. The simple answer is “you better believe it’ll be talked about.” It’s not clear if Alec Baldwin is going to be present in the studio tonight to play Trump; if that wasn’t the plan, you have to think someone is frantically calling his phone now hoping to get him to stop by. It’ll for sure be brought up during the Weekend Update portion of the program.
The unfortunate thing for Spencer is that all of the recent political headlines could overshadow her show, similar to what happened to when Kristen Stewart hosted and we got the debut of Melissa McCarthy as Sean Spicer. There is almost so much for SNL right now to mock from this space that they’ve got a near-unlimited pool of options. We almost pity them having to select what they want to do.
For the record, we still firmly believe that Obama should host; not only that, but we firmly believe that it will send the ratings skyrocketing to another level.
Expectations for Spencer’s episode
The great thing about Octavia is that she’s the sort of performer who’s been around for long enough to experience career highs and lows. She’ll be grateful for the opportunity, and there won’t be a minute where you wonder if she’s taking it for granted. We absolutely do think that there’s a lot that she brings to the table comedically, and she’ll have the support of the full cast.
As for musical guest Father John Misty, he’s had a bit of a breakout past couple of years — though he looks in here a bit like a hipster critic at the opera questioning why someone is singing off-key.
