‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ going live again for upcoming President Trump address
“The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” may have had plenty of rocky moments through its first year or so on the air, but it’s certainly now finding its niche — and it’s one that should feel very familiar to its host.
If you’re watching something with Colbert as the host, there’s a good chance that you’re doing so hoping for political humor. You wouldn’t watch wrestling to see John Cena eat an ice-cream cone! You go with what you’re great at, and few people are better in this realm than Stephen is. That’s why he’s beaten Jimmy Fallon the past two weeks in total viewers, even if “The Tonight Show” has an edge in the 18-49 demographic.
Consider this a sign that CBS is not nearly so concerned anymore about whether or not Colbert is too partisan as a host — here’s clearly doing just fine. As a matter of fact, the network is banking even MORE on his success by doing some more live shows this year.
Specifically, we’ve heard now that “The Late Show” will be live on February 28, specifically for the purpose of addressing President Trump’s joint session of Congress. Lisa Kudrow will be one of his guests, as will former White House press secretary Josh Earnest. (Don’t you think the he could have a few things to say in regards to Sean Spicer?) All of this sounds on paper like it’ll be really fun and make for an entertaining show … but it is live and it has that anything-can-happen feel to it. Doing a live show is really all about finding the right people to appear at the right time. Some of Colbert’s live experiments have been rather great; however, we didn’t think that the Super Bowl special from 2016 hit the mark nearly as well as anyone wanted it to.
In general, the Trump administration’s made a huge impact when it comes to late-night TV ratings; Colbert’s show is up, and in general “Saturday Night Live” is enjoying some of the biggest ratings in its history in the wake of everything that’s been going on over there.
Do you think these great ratings will continue? Are we looking at a mere trend? We want to hear from you below! (Photo: CBS.)
