‘Blue Bloods’ season 7: Could Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny ever become Commissioner?

Blue Bloods season 7We should start off this particular “Blue Bloods” article with another sad reminder that unfortunately, there is no new episode airing on CBS tonight. The reasoning for that is simply a matter of ensuring that there are enough episodes stored in the bank for both the February and the May sweeps, and of course a few to air somewhere in between.

While you wait, we wanted to take on an interesting Danny-related topic as the show presses onward and we continue to see the progression of these characters’ careers: What will the future hold for Danny Reagan? He’s a detective on the show now, and has worked his way up to this position over time much in the way that his father and grandfather did. There have certainly been bumps in the road along the way, but that’s because Danny is a guy who thinks towards about justice first and obeying the precise letter of the law second.

With that in mind, you have to wonder if he’d even want Commissioner at some point down the road. This is a position defined by rules, and you know that whatever you do ends up setting some sort of precedent for everyone around you. Since taking that job, odds are that there are many times Frank thinks he could’ve acted based on his impulse over his brain, but he decided against it for the greater good.

In order for Danny to become this, he’d have to be more measured, and the joy of watching Donnie Wahlberg’s character is that he’s so passionate and such a fighter out in the field. (Plus, Donnie plays this character so well as-is.) Yet, people can and do change; who knows where he would be ten years from now? Frank cannot have the job forever, though we hope that he does for as long as “Blue Bloods” is on the air. A possible vision of Danny as Commissioner is best reserved for either imagining the future or for some sort of future series in which we see a different landscape with different cops — how about “Bluer Bloods”? Does that have a nice ring to it? Maybe you can argue that Jamie is as good of a future Commissioner candidate as Frank, or maybe you can argue that the NYPD would eventually go in a different direction just based on potential fears of nepotism starting to take over if they keep giving it to people with the last name of Reagan.

Still, we’re excited to find out over the next few seasons what all of the future plans for these characters are going to be. It’s definitely the hope that the show continues to air for a rather long time, but there comes a time where you have to start thinking about legacy and wondering precisely what it is that you want out of the remainder of your life. That time could be now.

What do you think: Do you think that Danny could ever be Commissioner down the road? Share some of your thoughts now in the attached comments.
