If ‘Sherlock’ season 5 happens, here’s what Holmes knows
We’ve had a few days now to start to digest the fact that the latest season of “Sherlock” is over, and also that there is no word precisely yet as to whether or not we’re going to have another opportunity to watch the series moving forward. We’re hopeful that the show will come back, but recognize that it’s probably not going to be for a long time. The majority of the folks out there who are making such bold proclamations about it coming out soon are completely full of it … or just desperate for attention. Maybe both.
With the way that the show ended, with established Holmes and Watson getting back down to business in the aftermath of the showdown with Eurus, there may be some ways the show could even now benefit from a time jump. It could establish further precisely how much Holmes has learned since the days of the pilot, and that is something executive producer Steven Moffat noted further in a new interview with the Radio Times on the subject:
“… Sherlock now finally understands that’s he’s stronger and smarter than Mycroft in a way. But not because he is actually smarter – he’s less smart – but because his emotions, his connections to other human beings, the wisdom he has gained from his connections he has made in the world, make him stronger.
“He sees that, partly because the extreme of [his sister] Eurus who has no connection to anything, is just pure brain, not understanding anything about what it is to be human. [This] makes him realise everything he has worked towards, everything he has tried to get away from himself and deny about himself, is what makes him the strongest.”
Hopefully, this is a skill and a superpower — when combined with his intelligence — that we’re going to see Holmes embrace more and more as we get further along into the series. It’s certainly something that we are rather thrilled that he possesses, and something that makes him so inherently likable. Now, the waiting begins, and we’re excited for what happens in a few years’ time when some of the people associated with the show start to potentially get that itch to be a part of this once more.
