‘Outlander’ season 3: How the PCAs should have handled Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan, show’s victory
Tonight, there was a great celebration for “Outlander” fans courtesy of the People’s Choice Awards, as the show won a total of four different awards at the People’s Choice Awards this year: Favorite TV Show, Favorite Premium Sci-Fi / Fantasy Series, Sci-Fi / Fantasy Actor (Sam Heughan), and Sci-Fi / Fantasy Actor (Caitriona Balfe).
Basically, what we’re trying to say is that the show effectively dominated, but you wouldn’t know that if you watched it live.
Why didn’t the show’s broadcast give “Outlander” any love? The simple reason for that, superficially, is because the cast and crew are currently filming season 3. The show tends to have a habit of not airing or featuring any of the winners when there is no one there to accept the awards, mostly because having someone say “I accept this on their behalf” makes for dead air. We don’t fault the PCAs for opting against having that happen multiple times. What we’re really surprised about is that Favorite TV Show is effectively the prize of the night in the TV categories, and we do think the PCAs bungled how they handled that mightily.
Given that clearly the “Outlander” cast knew of the win in advance, why couldn’t CBS show something similar to the video below posted by Starz? We’ve certainly seen other shows in the past at several awards shows have the chance to do a remote acceptance speech, one where they announce all their victories at once and get a chance to thank the fans. For all the work that the fans of this show put into voting, especially for the top prize, we do think that they deserved the opportunity to see their favorite stars on network TV for a moment or two. Alas, that remote acceptance speech didn’t happen.
What we do want to emphasize here is that the lack of TV time does not marginalize any of these wins in any way, given that it is hugely significant. This is the first time that a cable series has won Favorite TV Show at the PCAs — this category specifically has only been around a handful of years, but when you look at the history of similar categories in the decades before that, cable shows weren’t breaking through (they typically only won awards designated for cable.) “Outlander” had a pretty transcendent win tonight, and it toppled shows with far more promotion on CBS and huge mainstream followings. We predicted that it would happen in advance, and we’re not trying to pat ourselves on the back here — we’ve just known thanks to covering the show for years here at CarterMatt how much “Outlander” fans love their show and love Sam and Caitriona.
So “Outlander” fans, celebrate your win! Also, enjoy the video from Heughan and Balfe HERE — and the Q&A that is going to follow as designated within. You’ve earned it.
How should the PCAs have handled the show’s many victories in your mind? Share in the attached comments.

I watched it last year and thought it was done poorly, should have known better it wouldn’t improve this year; in fact it was worse. They should have acknowledged Outlander as the big winner of the night regardless. It won the top TV award for Best TV Show – beating out top network shows – along with the 3 other awards for actress, actor and show in sci-fi. Congrats to Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan and Outlander for your wins!! Thanks Starz and cast crew , etc and especially Diana Gabaldon for giving us the books that inspired the show!
Won’t be watching next year.

Major snub by PCA. Favorite TV Show is the biggest award for TV and there is no excuse for not featuring it!! Could have been a great opportunity to introduce Outlander to mainstream audiences.

The PCA’s just cant get it together. The crowwd cheering needs to be limited, presenter chatter is inept, winners speeches need to be shortened AND the highest voted winners need to be acknowledged. This was pitiful!

All winners should at least be announced on the air. A taped accepted being broadcast would be better.

They did not mention or allow Sam and Cait on the stage when Outlander won best new show two years ago and both of them attended the PCA awards. PCA simple does not recognize their category even if the cast and production members actually attend the show. Look at past years. Crap Show.

This was a HUGE win for OUTLANDER & the PCAs should have played the video, not with just Sam & Cait, but the entire cast & crew. Happy for the win, but disappointed that there was no mention on air.

This has to help keep Outlander on the air for seasons to come…that is why we all voted and voted and voted. Diana keep writing! Fans get all your friends to tune in!

Not announcing Favorite Show was a major FAIL. But they didn’t even bring This Is Us on stage for whatever they won – that was a disappointment too. And there they were sitting in the front row. So bizarre. I think Mark Burnett should not produce the show next year.

Considering the reason for PCA’s, to showcase the PUBLIC’s favorite shows and performers, the least they could do was reward TV viewers by prioritizing the show towards that end! Gee, what a novel idea, a televised awards show actually showing who won! It’s the primary reason I watch. But I’m not wasting my time with PCA anymore. They screwed up last year and did worse this year. Advertisers will not pay for air time on a show no one watches. This consumer is leaving her seat.

It sucks every year, yet I still watch. They show very few awards, and they don’t even show all of the main categories.

I’m frustrated! Stayed up to see if Outlander won and got 50 minutes of show and the rest commercials. And had to suffer through 4th harmony with auto tune. If they can’t show all the awards they should cut commercial time and lengthen the show but Outlander got robbed of the ability to grow the audience. Very well deserved awards.

Thank you Matt? This show is a joy. Diana has written a story that speaks to people’s desire for connection, family, justice, love and hope, with characters so alive that they become friends to readers. Ron and Maril promised/recreated the same story and Caitriona and Sam became those people she put on paper. It is an elegant, real and important reflection of lifelong relationships and first person history untold.
Very disappointed the PCA ignored the remarkable 4 awards win- has it ever been done? A glaring mistake. Favorite TV Show of all those nominated in all categories.
Please make sure the PCAs know and correct in some way what they ignored.

We wuz robbed of screen time, which is unfathomable given that fans – The People – voted Outlander as Favorite TELEVISION Show, not only Premium SciFi/Fantasy.

The first thing I mentioned when the broadcast finished was the absence of the nominees for best TV show and the winner. This would be the main TV award yet there was nothing. That is ridiculous that they excluded it and had no taped award acceptance like is done with other award shows
