‘The Voice UK’ hopeful Michelle John a backing singer for Eric Clapton, Joss Stone, and more (video)
While shows like “The Voice UK” can be quite good sometimes when it comes to finding undiscovered talent, one of the other things that we do tend to enjoy about it is when they find someone who’s been fighting in the music industry for the long time and is looking for that one big break. These are the people you know are going to be grateful for the opportunity, and will work their butts off in the event they get a record deal after the fact to produce the best music they can. Isn’t that the kind of winner we want? Someone who is as passionate about their music as the fans are?
Could Michelle John be one of these people entering this weekend’s episode? We have to consider the possibility, based solely on what she brings to the table in the sneak peek below. She’s choosing to perform one of the BIGGEST songs of all time in “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” — it’s bold, it’s aggressive, and it can be intimidating. If it goes wrong, it can be a total car crash, but if she hits the mark then this could be the start of her road to the winner’s circle.
The good news for Michelle — who’s done backing-vocal work for the likes of Eric Clapton, Joss Stone, and Annie Lennox — is that she doesn’t seem at all fazed by the challenge of the song. She hits a number of big notes, she’s got the swagger, and while (of course) the sneak peek below doesn’t give you a full sense of her story or if any of the mentors turn their chairs around for her, we don’t think that there’s much of a reason to worry … though we suppose this is probably the best time to point out that last week there were some deserving artists who inexplicably didn’t get that chair to turn.
For now, let’s put on our idealist cap and hope that the coaches do the right thing here. Not only that, but let’s hope that Michelle finds a way to keep pressing on further in the competition. It’s always hard to gauge long-term success based on a preview like this, but we do think that she’s going to get at the very least better gigs after this.
