Hugh Dancy suggests possible timeline for ‘Hannibal’ revival, is still interested in returning
Who knew that there would be a chance to actually report on “Hannibal” this early into the new year? It’s a show that’s been off of the air now well over a year now, but as so many people out there likely know, it remains one of our favorites from the past decade or so. It’s visually striking, impeccably-acted, and the writing from Bryan Fuller and company is on another level.
Unfortunately, we also know that it won’t be coming back anytime soon, mostly because there is no clear home for it (NBC canceled the show previously) and the entirety of the cast and crew is rather busy. Fuller has “American Gods” along with developing “Amazing Stories,” Hugh Dancy has “The Path,” and Mads Mikkelsen is busy appearing in “Rogue One” and other blockbusters. The interest is still there, but there are so many hoops to clear.
It is probably with this in mind that Dancy said the following when asked about the revival possibility in an interview with TVLine:
“My feeling is that, knock on wood, if it came around again, it wouldn’t be a bad thing for it to be four or five years later. I think that might actually be kind of interesting … It’s such a strange idea, but it’s potentially very healthy for a story like that. So we’ll see.”
While this may be a far-off timeline, isn’t it certainly better to have “Hannibal” several years from now than no “Hannibal” at all?
Dancy also noted that a Silence of the Lambs adaptation would be the hope for the show still if it returned, and that the story would likely be reconfigured in a way to give Will Graham a more active role in it as opposed to being on the sidelines. Given that his relationship with Hannibal is at the center of the TV version, we would not have it any other way.
These comments from Dancy come not long after Fuller recently expressed some interest of his own in continuing the series. We still say that you do four or five episodes so that it doesn’t interfere with anyone else’s projects, and create a model similar to “Sherlock” until you are done with the story.
