CBS orders more ‘The Great Indoors,’ ‘Man with a Plan,’ and ‘Kevin Can Wait’ episodes
While we wouldn’t label many of CBS first-year comedies at the moment mass critical darlings, at the same time they are clearly succeeding in the way that they cares about the most: The bottom line. Therefore, you cannot be too surprised that all three of these shows are going to be getting a little bit of a further opportunity to shine moving forward this season.
Today, it was announced that both “The Great Indoors” and “Man with a Plan” are getting three more episodes beyond their original order, which brings all of them to a full 22. Meanwhile, “Kevin Can Wait” was also picked up for two more episodes, which brings that total up to 24 for the first season.
We spoke about this recently when it comes to “Last Man Standing,” but we wonder if it is equally true here when it comes to whether or not there is any sort of perceived conservative-viewer movement going on here. This is a show that, despite only okay ratings for ABC, has become a monster in syndication. Much of the thinking behind that is that it performs very well in the heartland, and appeals to an audience that doesn’t necessarily enjoy some of the riskier comedy shows out there. These three shows are all rather down-to-earth in their own way, which makes us wonder if CBS perceives them as having similar appeal if they last long enough. “The Great Indoors” is probably the edgiest of the three of them, but at the same time, it makes fun of millennials. Isn’t that one of many viewers’ favorite things to do at this point?
We’ll see where the ratings go for all of these shows as we move into the next seasons for each one of them. For now, there is no official word one way or another on whether or not they will be back.
