‘Sherlock’ season 4 delivers big ratings for premiere, Mary Watson shocker
Sunday night brought you more than just the arrival of the new year — it also gave you a chance to check out some more “Sherlock” on the air! Was the waiting ultimately worth it? Based on what we’re hearing from most viewers the answer there is “yes,” and clearly the folks over at The BBC are feeling the same way after seeing some of the numbers that are coming out.
Overall, a total of approximately 8.1 million people were able to catch the first episode entitled “The Six Thatchers,” one that contained an enormous surprise for the Mary Watson that you can read a little bit more about by heading over to the link here. This is an extremely large share of the audience in Britain, even if there was a slight decrease between this and last year’s “The Abominable Bride” special. The same goes for the season 3 premiere years ago in “The Empty Hearse.”
Now that we’ve said that, we would contend that there is a certain degree of the drop that is expected when you consider some of the circumstances here. After all, you just need to remember that this is a climate where more and more people are finding ways to watch television without having to do so live, and in general ratings do tend to fall just because at this point, there aren’t necessarily too many people you are picking up as viewers. Instead, there are a larger pool in which you are losing.
We anticipate that even with what happened to Mary, the series is going to continue to go strong moving forward the rest of the season. The ratings have absolutely nothing to do with whether or not we get a chance to see the show continue on the air. Instead, that is really all about the availability of the people on the series, as stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman appear to simultaneously got a billion different things happening in their lives at almost every moment.
