‘Sherlock’ season 4: Creators Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss will continue with series as long as it airs
While Steven Moffat may be stepping down showrunner from “Doctor Who” after the upcoming tenth season of it on the air, there is one thing that you should know now when it comes to him and “Sherlock“: There are absolutely zero plans to do the same thing here.
As Moffat said (per Digital Spy) while promoting the upcoming fourth season of the series (co-created with Mark Gatiss) premiering on New Year’s Day, “loads of other people will do Sherlock Holmes and we’ll be the first people to watch those… but our version is our version.” Ultimately, we do see where he’s coming from here given that this is a project that he and Gatiss created, even if it was based on material that is already out there. This is a little bit different than something like “Doctor Who,” which he took on following its creation.
This is something that we really would not want any other way, given that this series is almost completely and utterly the product of these two men, coupled with the performances of actors like Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. Plus, a big part of the beauty of it is that there is this tremendous creative freedom that they can work on it now, and then take a back seat with it and come back to it down the line if they so choose. There’s no pressure to rush out seasons given the schedules of everyone involved.
Technically, we don’t even know for certain that there will be a season 5; it’s just one of those things we are choosing for the time being to remain optimistic on, given that over time that thirst to come back could rise out of all the key players.
