Should a ‘Hawaii Five-0’ / ‘MacGyver’ crossover happen?

While the past several weeks have been kind to both “Hawaii Five-0” and “MacGyver” in terms of giving us new episodes, unfortunately all great things must come to an end — we’re just lucky in this instance that said ending is temporary. There is no new episode airing tonight on CBS, and you’re going to have to wait until early January until either show comes back on the air.

Still, a couple weeks off here and there isn’t all that bad, mostly because 1) you don’t want to see the ratings suffer because of it being this time of year and 2) it gives people a chance to catch up who are a week or two behind. We especially recommend this to prospective “MacGyver” viewers, given that there hasn’t been too many episodes yet and the show gets better and better as it goes along.

Let’s get back now to the question in the title. Should a crossover between the two shows happen? We know that there is an easy argument for it, given that you’re dealing here with two shows that air on the same network on the same night, are of the same genre, are remakes of classic TV hits, and even have share executive producer Peter M. Lenkov. Also, you can create the idea for it in a matter of minutes (at least in terms of broad-strokes): Mac and Jack are sent on a mission to Hawaii, and they recruit the help of the Five-0 to catch some sort of international terrorist. We’ve seen Five-0 crossover before with “NCIS: Los Angeles,” and this seems to be even more organic and easier to pull off story-wise.

Now that we’ve said that, there are obviously still some major challenges, with the biggest one being getting the casts of the two shows in the same spot, given that “Hawaii Five-0” is in Hawaii (naturally) and “MacGyver” is on the complete other side of the country in Georgia. (It filmed the pilot in Los Angeles, but then went to the East Coast.) You also have to get the network and the studio fully on board, and find some innovative ways to promote it. Given that this is the first season of “MacGyver,” it may be a little early to have this happen since you didn’t enough until during the season as to whether or not you were getting a back-nine order. If the show is renewed for a second season (we’re optimistic at present), that may give the powers-that-be some more time to figure it out.

Let’s be clear that crossovers are not always a great idea, since sometimes it can feel cheesy and doesn’t really add anything other than fan service. Yet, you’ve got here in “MacGyver” a show that has its characters frequently traveling, so this is not a hard one to justify. Also, it makes perfect sense to turn this into some sort of two-hour event.
