‘Gotham’ season 3: About the Barbara Kean – Harley Quinn chatter
Given that Harley Quinn is currently one of the most-popular comic-book characters going, especially if you are talking here mostly in terms of costume sales, you have to imagine that “Gotham” wants to do something with the character in due time. Not only that, but we’ve heard the show’s producers say that they want to introduce someone who could be viewed as an early version of the character. Maybe that means we’ll get an “inspiration” as Jerome was to the Joker, or meet someone who will become the character down the line.
Has there been many questions regarding whether or not Barbara Kean could be the new Harley, and we understand that — and judging from what Erin Richards told CinemaBlend recently, she very much does, as well:
“There have been conversations. I think something major would have to happen to Barbara for her to fully become Harley Quinn. Because Harley Quinn is kind of…she doesn’t, to me, have the motivation that Babs has. Harley Quinn seems to like destruction for destruction’s sake, and that’s wonderful, but I feel like Barbara has more of a plan. She’s a little bit more intellectual in her approach toward climbing the ladder and taking over the underworld. And I think if she was to then morph into Harley Quinn, there would have to be something that happened that sort of stripped away that kind of scheming side of her so that she would just become, I guess, unhinged in the world. That, to me, is what Harley Quinn represents. That madness and mayhem that comes along with The Joker, because obviously they’re a team.”
One other key difference between the two, at least to us, is that Harley considers The Joker to be the love of her life, while clearly Barbara feels this way about Jim Gordon. We don’t see Jim becoming The Joker anytime soon. We know that there are also people who’ll complain about canon out there given that Harley is probably younger than Barbara and roughly the same age or younger than Bruce Wayne, but when has this show stuck firmly to canon? We don’t see that as anywhere near as big of an issue.
