AMAs 2016: Bruno Mars opens show with ’24K Magic’
Tonight, the American Music Awards are airing on ABC, and of course with that there are expectations of not only a great show, but an especially-great opening that is going to leave people discussing it for quite some time to come. In this era of hyper-competition across both TV and the internet, you really have to go the extra mile in order to impress and try to get people excited about your show.
So what did the AMAs decide to do this year in order to try to build some of that buzz? Well, a really good way to do that is by opening your show with a performance of “24K Magic” from Bruno Mars! He’s one of the most consistently solid performers in live music; while he doesn’t necessarily do anything shocking or provocative in his presentation, he’s one of those people who doesn’t need to.
To us, one of the best things about watching Mars in this sort of environment is that he almost always seems to be having a good time. He dances in sync with his background singers, he works the crowd, and he sings live and without a heavy backing track. The biggest surprise of this opening was the significant stretch of time he left in here for a dance break, which isn’t necessarily the first thing that we think of when we think of a Mars performance, even if we do know that he’s more than capable of doing this.
This performance for Mars comes a few weeks after he performed this same song on “Saturday Night Live.” He’s one of many big artists on the night, but before we go further, we want to hear what you thought about this in the poll below!
