‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 13: See Ellen Pompeo’s email from Shonda Rhimes on episode 8
Last night, we made the case for “The Room Where it Happens” as the strongest episode of “Grey’s Anatomy” so far through season 13. While we don’t think every storytelling risk that this series makes necessarily works, we do still admire them for thinking outside of the box and trying to come up with something creative and interesting. We’ll always take that a million times over a reveal that falls more in the direction of “predictable.” Most episodes of the show are inherently good, but it is always lovely to see one that really strives to be something more, and can really coin itself as “great” when the dust settles.
What may also be nice for some of the cast working on the show is that their fearless leader does sometimes make sure that the cast knows when they’re knocking something out of the park. In the Instagram post below via Ellen Pompeo, you can see show creator Shonda Rhimes share some of her thoughts with a few select members of the show’s cast regarding their performances in the episode.
What made this episode so special, at least for us, is that it completely humanized the patient in the operating room, as each person involved took a moment in order to reflect on how this person in one way or another reminded them of a situation in their own lives. It gave you a very different sense of where these people came from, and for Pompeo’s Meredith in particular, you saw the death of Derek still firmly on her mind. Patrick Dempsey may be gone from the series, but he’s definitely not forgotten.
As for what the long-term impact of this episode will be, hopefully the winter finale next week paints us a little bit of a picture.
