‘Outlander’ season 3 will explore Claire, Frank’s marriage following her return
At the end of “Outlander” season 2, we saw the show jump forward to a time following the death of Frank Randall, where Claire took her daughter Brianna to Scotland and the two began a journey that led to Caitriona Balfe’s character going right back through the stones. The finale was a magnificent story that felt worthy of being a separate movie to the rest of the franchise; it book-ended everything that happened before the Battle of Culloden in the Jamie timeline, and set the stage for the aftermath of it in season 3. You’re going to see Claire, newly-empowered by the news that Jamie could still be alive, doing whatever she can in order to try and find her husband in that timeline.
Also, we’re apparently going to also fill in some other empty spaces in the story of Claire and Frank during their time together. Speaking per TV Guide, book author Diana Gabaldon, who has seen some early season 3 episodes, explained that “they’ve expanded that end of the story [of Claire and Frank] a little bit, but they’ve done it well, very consistently.”
With that, we are quick to assume that this is a similar sentiment to what we’ve seen “Outlander” and its writers do before. They capture the spirit and the essence of the books, but embrace the freedom to be able to either alter or add things that suit their story and serve the transition between mediums. In order to become fully invested in Claire as a character, you do need to understand all facets of her life — and to us, understanding this period with Frank, one where she had already lived and loved with Jamie and experienced what that was like, is incredibly important to understanding her need to go back through the stones the moment she realized that he was still alive.
This season will premiere in the spring, and of course you can expect to see many familiar developments, as well, including Jamie squaring off with Jonathan Randall and Claire’s passionate search to find her love and resume that aspect of her life. Brianna and Roger will continue to see their own larger roles on the series evolve.
