‘The Night Of’ season 2 closer to happening; wait continues for now

From out vantage point, it seems as good as gold that HBO will eventually order a second season of “The Night Of.” With that being said, there is one operating word in there above all others: Eventually. Given that every season could be a separate story, there is effectively no need to rush into something else. There are also other considerations to be made, such as whether or not you could re-use certain cast members; to us, John Turturro would make sense as a returning player, but there is not necessarily any need to bring anyone back.

The good news that we can report on at present is that HBO head Casey Bloys is interested in more, and he made it clear to Variety that the folks responsible for making the show are currently pondering over various ideas:

“The only issue with doing another season is for them to come up with an idea that excites them. Steve [Zaillian] and Richard [Price] are talking and sharing ideas. I think it’ll be a longer process, probably. Both of them take their time and will only do something they’re really passionate and excited about. They’re not going to do another season just to do another season … My guess is, it would be [one case in a season]. I think they’re talking about a lot of different variations, so at this point, all I know is that they’re talking about it. They haven’t come to us with anything. They’re just trying to get themselves excited about a take.”

Hopefully there is some sort of lesson learned from the mess that was “True Detective,” which seemed to suffer from not enough time between seasons in order to come up with a better angle. Maybe there just wasn’t a good one out there, but if that was the case, wouldn’t it have been better to end the show rather than continue to drag it along?

Our feeling is that we could have a second season of “The Night Of” in 2018 if the stars align the way that we want; while it may have to win back some viewers who forgot about the show over the long hiatus, that is certainly doable when you think for a moment or two about quality. That attracts people more than anything.
