‘Superstore’ season 2 granted full 22-episode season
We have our first full-season pickup today of the fall season, though we can’t trumpet this one too much given that we’re talking about a show with already a full batch of episodes in the can.
Today, NBC confirmed that they have officially handed the America Ferrera comedy “Superstore” an additional nine episodes for its sophomore season, giving it a full run of 22. This comes after the show delivered very good ratings for a post-Olympics special earlier this summer, and it turned last night to a 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic that matched its average for much of season 1. While this isn’t necessarily a smash-hit rating, it’s good enough to be one of the best comedies on any network other than ABC or CBS.
In a statement confirming this great news, NBC’s entertainment president Jennifer Salke had the following to say:
“We’re very proud of ‘Superstore’ and we were so happy to see fantastic viewing levels with the preview during the Olympics as well as last night’s ratings in its new Thursday anchor time period … This is a show our audience loves and, paired with ‘The Good Place,’ which our audience also loves, we think we have a sensational new comedy block to build this season.”
For the next few weeks, we definitely expect the show to continue to be a solid performer. The bigger test could come later next month, when “The Big Bang Theory” returns to its normal Thursday timeslot after football comes to a close. Are these shows going to be in competition with one another? This is something that you certainly do have to be aware of. Who knows, though? Maybe “Superstore” is already splitting viewers with the NFL and will be more than fine.
