‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 13 premiere reaction: What’s the future for April, Jackson?
For the majority of the “Grey’s Anatomy” premiere on ABC, the focus was clearly not on the relationship between April and Jackson. When you have Alex getting arrested, it’s understandable that much of the focus is going to be there. Yet, when we did see Sarah Drew and Jesse Williams’ characters in action, it was in a big way as the two tried to come together with their new daughter Harriet. Specifically, April stood by her decisions to Catherine, especially when it comes to the child’s last name.
So what about April and Jackson romantically? While they may be on better terms now, Drew tells TVLine in a premiere postmortem that the child is no guarantee that the two parties are going to find their way back together:
“There’s clearly still feelings there, but they’re definitely not together … There’s a carefulness that they have around one another in these first several episodes, because they don’t really know what they are. It’s challenging waters to navigate. In some ways, I feel like the audience is going to be like, ‘Why aren’t you guys just getting back together? What is wrong? Where is the conflict?’
“But you have to remember, the conflict that built up over the past two seasons still exists, even though we’re in this new tender space.”
Eventually, we do imagine that this is conflict that will be coming back into focus at some point, even if it is not in the near future. As soon as something comes up that these two characters disagree on, what happens then? You do have to wonder.
