Ratings: ‘This Is Us,’ ‘Bull’ premieres strong; ‘Scream Queens,’ ‘Agents of SHIELD’ return down

We’ve now gotten a full sense of all of the ratings for Tuesday night’s primetime lineup, and the consensus is clear on a few things, including that there is actually a thirst for a lot of new programming out there.

The good news – While it performed well on Facebook and YouTube over the summer, we still had little idea just how “This Is Us” was going to fare on NBC. It did much better than we imagined. With a 2.8 rating plus 10 million viewers, this could be the next big hit of the season. Given the mostly-positive reviews, we also have a feeling that this is a show that will retain a good chunk of its audience from one week to the next. “The Voice” (3.4) proved to be a solid lead-in.

Over on CBS, “Bull” also impressed with a 2.2 rating (surpassing the 2.1 rating of its “NCIS” lead-in) and also 15.5 million viewers. Both of these shows are likely to get seasons that are as long as the show creators wish for them to be.

The bad news – For some other scripted premieres, the news was not anywhere near as good. For example, over on ABC “Agents of SHIELD” scored just a 1.1 rating for its debut at 10:00 p.m., even with the much-hyped debut of Ghost Rider in mind. Meanwhile, “Scream Queens” mustered a 1.0 despite bringing in John Stamos and Taylor Lautner as parts of the cast.

Also, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (1.0) and “New Girl” (1.2) each also struggled, but that’s no surprise given that these are the sort of ratings these shows have received as of late.
