‘Major Crimes’ season 5, episode 13 (summer finale) review: Justice and an Andy Flynn cliffhanger

Major Crimes -

We’ve made it through to the end of “Major Crimes” this summer, and what we ended up seeing was further proof that while you can get justice, that does not quite mean that there is happiness on the other side.

For Buzz, we saw that in particular as he finally got to the bottom of what happened to his father 30 years ago. The pain here came in that arresting him meant that another child was left to grow up without a father. Justice had to be done, but it was not the relief he or Rusty once thought. Instead, it was a hollow feeling of the cycle continuing. Maybe you can say the same thing about the end of the “White Lies” story arc regarding the courthouse shooting. Dwight Darnell’s biological father and a vast conspiracy were all involved, and this was a case that had yet another dangerous end — which cannot be good for Sharon given how she was still reeling over what happened to Dwight.

When it comes to emotional notes, tonight there were plenty in between seeing Buzz realize the impact of his actions to also seeing Julio allow his foster son Marc to leave. You could already see the impact that he had on the child, who was no longer spouting off racist things every other word. You were starting to get the sense that we were going to end the summer in peace — and then a medical emergency arose for Andy Flynn. If there was a cliffhanger designed to smash hearts everywhere, this is it — and we honestly don’t think the show needed it in order to be effective, and to conclude a compelling case and tie up a great story for Buzz.

Tell us: Was the Andy cliffhanger perfect for the show, or ultimately a little much? Share in the comments.
