Emmys 2016: Kate McKinnon, Allison Janney, Niecy Nash vie for Supporting Actress – Comedy prize
With the 2016 Emmy Awards right around the corner, we’re still in the process of spotlighting many of the categories before we get around to airing on ABC. Today, the focus is on Supporting Actress in a Comedy, otherwise known as a category where there are a lot of contenders but not necessarily any one who is head and shoulders above the rest as a contender. We don’t mind to be hyperbolic here, but we do legitimately think any one of these ladies could win.
In addition to seeing our take on the field below, be sure to also vote on your own favorite below! We’re going to be posting the winners of all of these polls when we roll around to Sunday morning.
The nominees
Anna Chlumsky, “Veep” (HBO)
Gaby Hoffmann, “Transparent” (Amazon)
Allison Janney, “Mom” (CBS)
Judith Light, “Transparent” (Amazon)
Kate McKinnon, “Saturday Night Live” (NBC)
Niecy Nash, “Getting On” (HBO)
Analyzing the field – This is a pretty fun field given that there are so many women who in theory have what it takes to win. Of the group, we would say that the biggest fear for Light and Hoffmann to split the vote. With that, we consider them the most unlikely to take this home.
Who should win – McKinnon is the most consistent contributor on “SNL” at present, and she frequently steals just about every scene that she’s a part of. She’s great in “Weekend Update,” she can deliver during sketches, and with her having a larger profile right now thanks to the new “Ghostbusters,” she’s got a really good shot of taking this one home. We certainly also wouldn’t be mad if Nash took this home for the performance of her career to date.
Who will win – In the end, we do think that Janney still has the edge just because awards shows tend to love her and love honoring her. Also, her performance on “Mom” really tows the line properly between being incredibly funny and also sweet and meaningful. We’re not ruling out Chlumsky either given the respect for “Veep” that is out there.
