Ratings: ‘Son of Zorn’ has solid start; ‘BrainDead’ season 2 odds stagnant

Last night was the first Sunday to have ratings impacted by NFL football in a major way, and we certainly saw the results ebb and flow somewhat as a result of that.

Let’s start with the good news over on Fox, as “Son of Zorn” proved to be a relative winner in its first-ever airing. The pilot generated a 2.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which was better than anything else on the network in primetime. Granted, it was the only new programming to air, and it lost a big chunk of its NFL lead-in due to most likely football airing of on NBC.

Like with many other Fox shows on Sunday, it could be the new year until we can really gauge the long-term potential of this series. There are so many other weeks coming up where the live-action / animation hybrid could benefit from various lead-ins / people simply leaving the TV on Fox after football ends. We do want to see it do well because of it being an innovative concept; hopefully with the pilot out of the way, the show will have less to do when it comes to having to explain itself week in and week out.

Elsewhere, the news was less great for CBS’ first-year summer series “BrainDead,” which averaged a meager 0.4 rating over the course of its two episodes on the night. Given that this show was moved away from its initial timeslot and its ratings are barely good enough for cable, let alone broadcast, there is just about zero reason to think that we’re going to see the network show interest in a second season.
