‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 13 to take deep dive into Alex – Jo relationship
In some of the previews we’ve seen so far for “Grey’s Anatomy” season 13, it is clear that one of the main focuses is going to be Alex, Jo, and the aftermath of the situation with Andrew at the end of this past season. After all, there are so many different things to unpack from just this one situation.
1. Jo has now admitted to being already married, and is trying to escape her past life by immersing herself in a new world. While we don’t want to see her brought back into that, it is something she may need to revisit if she ever wants to move forward.
2. Jo also has a history of domestic violence, so how is she going to feel about Alex getting violent with someone else?
3. Alex of course has his own demons to conquer, and putting him in this position could feel like a major step back.
With all of this in mind, the series has plenty of material to cover, but it wasn’t plotted out just for the sake of throwing up domestic violence as a plot point. In speaking to that to Entertainment Weekly, creator Shonda Rhimes had the following message to pass along:
“I don‘t think that I ever think about doing things, like, ‘Oh, we’re doing a domestic violence story as an issue.’ It felt like it was time to tell Jo’s story, and it felt like it was time to tell Jo’s story especially in the context of Alex, who he is and how he grew up. Alex is so defined by who he used to be and who he is trying to become, and so is Jo.”
Is there reason to think that these two characters could take a step forward and start a new life together? Absolutely, but at the same time things don’t come easy in this world. It’s something that almost any viewer should know by now.
