‘Narcos’ season 3: Show boss on early plans
We should of course begin this article with a big warning: Stop reading now if you have yet to watch all of “Narcos” season 2. Sure, the show is based on history and much of its events are noted in fact, but we certainly would understand if you want to continue watching and learn about the story yourself.
Still with us? Then we’ve got the earliest of teases from showrunner Eric Newman about how is perceiving the upcoming third season of the show. Speaking per The Hollywood Reporter, he explained some of the intricacies that the show has planned, and that a recent teaser video putting Gilberto in the place of Pablo Escobar was not meant to necessarily be literal:
“We don’t want to replace Pablo Escobar. We are going to look deeper into the systemic effects within Colombia of cocaine and corruption. Unlike Escobar who had positioned himself as an outlaw, Cali was very much a part of the system. They had bought their way in and they enjoyed a different kind of protection than Pablo did. Pablo was protected by the people who loved him and Cali was protected by a political and economic system that they had rather ingeniously built. It’s a different kind of villain. While Escobar was a single-cell organism, they were a complex, multi-celled organism.
“There are four Cali godfathers: brothers Gilberto and Miguel (Francisco Denis), Pacho Herrera (Alberto Ammann), all of whom we’ve met, and then there is a fourth named “Chepe,” who is a sort of fascinating and colorful guy. It wouldn’t be surprising to anyone to know that they met bad endings, but I think as we learned in season two, it’s getting there that’s fun. They’re certainly going to be a big part of season three.”
Will the show work without Pablo on board? That obviously is a question we won’t quite know until season 3 comes around, but we’d be foolish to sit here and think that all of the meat of the story of the cartel has already been chewed up and spit out. There is still so much more to be explored about not only the culture, but also (as Newman notes) the widespread consequences of some of what these people did.
