Fall Preview 2016: Will ABC’s ‘Notorious’ capitalize on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ lead-in?
Coming into this fall, “Notorious” is one of those shows in a really interesting spot. Due to “Scandal” being off the air until the fall thanks to Kerry Washington’s pregnancy, it is getting to try out for size airing in its timeslot after “Grey’s Anatomy.” That’s great news. It also has an interesting premise and a cast, led by Piper Perabo, who was fantastic throughout the run of “Covert Affairs” on ABC.
So what does it have working against it? That’s what we will try to highlight, among other things, in the latest edition of our Fall TV Preview below.
Premiere Date and Timeslot Competition – Thursday, September 22 at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time. As hyped up by many, the show has the “Scandal” spot for the fall, and a great lead-in the aforementioned medical drama. While it’s up against “Chicago Med,” “Supernatural,” and football over at CBS for the first few weeks, we see the real issue being this: Trying to convince casual “Scandal” fans that they are not trying to take over. If “Scandal” could be on this fall, it would; ABC has to air something.
Logline – “Inspired by the true-life stories of famed criminal defense attorney Mark Geragos and cable news producer Wendy Walker, the series is a provocative look at the unique, sexy, and dangerous interplay of criminal law and the media.”
Cast – Piper Pirabo, Daniel Sunjata, Sepideh Moafi , Kate Jennings Grant, Ryan Guzman, Kevin Zegers, J. August Richards, and Aimee Teegarden.
Trailer – It’s a slick, fascinating trailer that helps to explore the relationship between the legal system and the media, especially in terms of how they could be manipulated. The premise could be spelled out a little bit clearer, but we do think that there’s enough in here to where it obviously looks different than most of everything else on TV. “The Newsroom” on HBO is probably the closest thing that there is to a comparable out there for this.
Overall Take – The show looks like it could be a perfect addition to the Thursday lineup, which we really want to keep calling TGIT regardless of what ABC brands it as. The thing we actually loathe about the show the most is the title; it’s completely forgettable and tells you nothing about the show. We’ve watched it a few times, and there are still days where we cannot remember what in the world this is called.
