TV Quick Hits: Britney Spears returns for 2016 VMAs; ‘Varsity Blues’ series talk; ‘Powerless’ showrunner exits

Britney Spears returning to VMAs – There was a stretch of many years when Britney Spears was the golden child of the MTV Video Music Awards. Now, we may be reentering that era in a certain capacity.

MTV has confirmed that Spears will return to perform new single “Make Me…” with G-Easy while at the 2016 edition of the awards show, and this should be a nice chance for them to get in some nostalgia. In between the Madonna kiss and the performance with the snake, she’s one of the reasons why this show remained relevant during a certain era in time.

As for some other recent news…

“Varsity Blues” TV series in development – Per Deadline, CMT has ordered a script for an adaptation of the popular feature film. The original writer in W. Peter Iliff is back on board, but there aren’t too many other details available just yet. What we do know is that with “Nashville” coming, the network is clearly trying to up their scripted slate. Also, football seems right in line with their demo and some of the other stuff they’ve got on the air. If the script works, this feels likely to happen.

“Powerless” showrunner exits – Deadline also reports that creator / showrunner Ben Queen is stepping down from the NBC midseason entry over creative differences. To us, this is super-distressing given everything we’ve felt about this series so far is optimistic. After all, it’s set in the world of DC Comics, and it has Ron Funches and Danny Pudi involved. Then again, it’s certainly been a tumultuous year for DC as a whole, other than the good stuff over on The CW. Hopefully, this show still ends up matching our expectations.
