‘Vikings’ season 4 spoilers: Lagertha’s got a new love interest

Lagertha -

The fourth season of “Vikings” is returning to History later this year, and with that there are going to be many things that are different than what we saw in the first batch of episodes. Of course, much of this is coming as a result of the time jump. Ivar the Boneless could become the ruthless character that you expect, Ragnar faces new challenges, and for Lagertha, you’re going to see her in a rather different place than she has been in so far in the series.

Specifically, she will have a new love interest that proves to be a stark contrast to the men she has been with in the past. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, creator Michael Hirst passed along the following message:

“That’s a new female character called Astrid [played by Josefin Asplund]. She’s become a part of Lagertha’s life. They are in a relationship. You can well imagine why Lagertha might now be in a relationship with a woman, because all the men she’s been involved with have betrayed her and let her down. And no one could really expect her to live totally alone, she’s not that kind of a woman. And I’m not saying that she’s suddenly discovered that she’s a lesbian, that’s not the point. The point is, she’s in a relationship with someone she feels more comfortable with, someone she feels she might be able to trust, and it’s a woman.

“She’s a ruler, she’s got lots of responsibility, she has ambitions beyond that, but in terms of her personal life, if she can help it, she’s not gonna get involved with another guy who’s gonna want immediately to take her earldom away from her. So she’s with a woman, who’s not going to want to do that – at least initially!”

Could this prove to be an exciting change for the character? We certainly have some high hopes for the story, but we can say that about the entire series moving forward given where the story has taken us so far over the course of the past few years. We’re almost exploring a brave new world at this point, even if this world is still far in the past and we have a fairly good inclination as to where some things are going to end.
