‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 8: Nina Dobrev in discussions to return as Elena

Delena -

Back when Nina Dobrev first departed “The Vampire Diaries” at the end of season 6, there were some clear indications that the character of Elena Gilbert could return eventually for a series finale or some other big event down the road. We already heard her voice during the season 7 finale, and now it seems that we’re getting closer to her returning in some capacity.

Speaking (per TVLine) while at the TCA Summer Press Tour, CW programming head Mark Pedowitz made it clear that “there are discussions going on with Nina” about a return for the eighth and final season. As for what capacity that will be in, we’re still not sure. Pedowitz insists that they would love to have Nina back,” as she was “great for The CW. She was integral for The Vampire Diaries.” (During her time on the show the ratings were certainly at their peak.)

Pedowitz did also make it clear that even in the event that Dobrev does not turn back up, executive producer Julie Plec “has planned a great series finale,” one that will make longtime fans of the show pleased.

Personally, we feel fairly confident that something will be worked out here, given that this is not a situation where Dobrev left the show on terrible terms and with some desire to never see any of these people again. Everything seems fine with her and the series, so we figure the big point of discussions are how long she will be around and making the scheduling work.
