‘Star Trek: Discovery’ spoilers: CBS All Access series reportedly casting female lead

As many of you are well aware at this point, “Star Trek: Discovery” is the much-anticipated new chapter of the franchise coming to CBS All Access, and it appears already like the show is plotting out their main character.

According to a new report from Deadline, executive producer Bryan Fuller is looking for the next Captain to follow up the likes of Kirk, Picard, Janeway, and others, and it will be a woman. More than likely, it will be a diverse casting, as well. Ironically, this news comes out a time when CBS proper is coming under fire for promoting a fall schedule that is heavy on white, male leads.

Personally, our primary sentiment on this is that what matters most is that they find the right person for the role, and it seems like the show is casting out a wide-enough net for that to happen. Given his work on “Hannibal,” “Pushing Daisies,” and even some other editions of the “Star Trek” franchise, we have all of the faith in the world in Fuller to create something fantastic.

Here’s more of what he had to say on the process to date:

“We haven’t cast her yet and we don’t know what level of diversity she will be. The story that’s fascinating for me is that we’ve seen six series from captain’s point of view and to see one from another point of view gives us a richer context.”

Fuller added that there will be around seven crew members in general, and one of them could be an LGBTQ character, as well.
