‘The Musketeers’ season 3, episode 9 reaction: Death and protection
The penultimate episode of “The Musketeers” aired on BBC One Saturday night, and we have to say that this is a show that wasted almost no time at all in handing out the shockers. The death of the King in the opening minutes was a way to throw much of France into utter chaos, especially when you have a crazy threat like Grimaud running around.
By and large, this is a character with a pretty clear agenda: Destruction. He and Gaston led the charge to eventually find the king’s son, the Dauphin would could quickly become the king himself. Things looked dicey for the vast majority of the episode, but we wouldn’t say that the adversaries have everything that they want just yet.
What this show did once again rather well is give us a steady build in the action. Sure, we started big, but as the episode went on it only became crazier and crazier as the story spiraled into chaos. While Porthos did what he could to rescue Dauphin, in the process we lost someone essential to the entire plan to protect him in the first place: Treville. Unfortunately, we saw it as rather likely that we were going to be without a character by the time we got around to the finale. We were just hoping it would not be him because of all of the interesting ways in which he contributed to the world. Also, in general you really don’t want to see Grimaud win at anything because he is so exceptionally power-hungry and terrible.
If you love this show, you’re probably leaving this episode with a mixture of emotions. More than likely, you’re thrilled to just enjoy another exciting hour of TV; yet, you’re sad by the fact that this is the penultimate one (the BBC really messed around too much with this final season), and also by the person we lost right before we got to the end of the road.
