‘America’s Got Talent’ breakdown: Why Daniel Joyner, Hara, Dorothy Williams were eliminated

We’ve loved covering “America’s Got Talent” this season (and really every other season, for that matter), so we’re happy to expand our coverage today with another new feature: A breakdown as to why certain acts were eliminated on every given week. Look out for these articles on Thursdays, since this gives us an opportunity to be a little bit reflective as to why certain people left.

For some of the acts this week, it is fairly easy to assess their elimination. For others, it’s a little bit more challenging.

Dorothy Williams – This one is sadly easy to pinpoint: Fun as she may be, Nick Cannon’s Golden Buzzer act never stood a chance. She made it here mostly because Cannon thought it was nice to give her a moment. It’s sweet, but she’s now had it.

Outlawz – Sometimes, getting an X from a judge like Simon Cowell can really hurt you in the eyes of the public. However, the dance group can also look at a small amount of screen time as a factor to go along with performing early in the show and having a rather disjointed routine. They are talented, but we wish there was more of a coherent theme beyond the costumes and the beginning.

Daniel Joyner – What a rollercoaster ride this was for Daniel. His Judge Cuts performance was outstanding; however, his live show rendition of “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” was a step back. Note to future singers: Don’t choose this song. It’s great for a full concert, but it doesn’t showcase talent well on a show like this. For a Queen song, there are some vocal limitations here.

Sila Sveta – Some negative feedback from Simon hurt the wild-card act, but so did two other factors: Not even appearing in the Judge Cuts (we’re not sure how many people remembered them from their first audition), and it felt almost like they had to come up with this routine at the last minute. Admittedly, though, we probably would be more blown away had we not seen similar dance / technology acts over the past couple of years.

Hara – This one is the trickiest, given that we do think Hara was talented enough to be a semifinalist. Maybe he’ll get a wild-card spot in the future; personally, we would’ve put him through over Musicality in the one change we’d make to the results last night. The sole issue we had with Hara this week was that his presentation was almost too dark and difficult to follow; it probably played better in the room than on TV. We know that he’s amazing, so we’d be more than thrilled to see him again.
