Emmys 2016: ‘The Carmichael Show,’ Sir Patrick Stewart, Emmy Rossum top reader Comedy picks
One of the exciting things about the Emmys this year is that in some ways, the race feels fairly open. We do think that there are some favorites in the drama race such as “Mr. Robot,” but there isn’t necessarily one comedy that is standing head and shoulders above the rest. There’s some division there in ranks, and we certainly think it’s possible that some of our reader picks are not even nominated this year. That is not a slam against our readers for failing to have their finger on the pulse; instead, it’s more commentary on just how many good candidates are out there.
With that in mind, let’s go ahead and bring to you some of the winners, as determined by our readers. The actual Emmy nominations are coming Thursday.
Comedy Series – “The Carmichael Show.” It was a close race in this field, but we’re personally glad to see the show snag it since it is a sitcom trying things few other sitcoms are brave enough to. Not only that, but it’s genuinely funny.
Comedy Actor – Sir Patrick Stewart, “Blunt Talk.” This was a bit of a surprise victory for us in this category; we included him out of respect for his work on the show, but were skeptical about his odds at actually getting a flurry of votes since the show has a smaller audience. Happy to be proven wrong.
Comedy Actress – Emmy Rossum, “Shameless.” The whole “Emmy gets and Emmy” bit is corny, but hey, she’s deserving! This was actually a very close showdown between her and Gina Rodriguez of “Jane the Virgin.”
Comedy Supporting Actor – Congratulations to Pete Davidson of “Saturday Night Live,” who won here with a pretty commanding victory. For a man who is not even on Twitter anymore, he has built a tremendous web following.
Comedy Supporting Actress – For our final award in this category, we give some love to Mayim Bialik, who won a fairly close race on our site over Lea Michele.
