Will ‘Maya & Marty’ season 2 renewal happen? Why it should
Tonight, NBC is wrapping up the super-brief ten-episode run of “Maya & Marty” with a show full of comedy, guest stars, and a few other silly things here and there including an opening musical number.
Now, is this going to be the last we see of the show? We certainly hope not, since we do think there is some promise here. While not every sketch worked, they never do on these sorts of shows! Some are going to deliver the goods, and a few others will underwhelm. The important thing here is that the ones that nailed were consistently funny, and Maya Rudolph and Martin Short were always rather brilliant at getting some of their famous friends to show and give it some more clout.
In some ways, touting the big names is enough of a reason to bring the show back, since it can be counted on to deliver that time and time again in the future. Another good reason is simply that it’s hard to find other big programming. NBC is probably better set than most in the summer, and its ratings aren’t necessarily through the roof. Yet, it gives the summer an air of unpredictability, and it’s a nice way to laugh a little while waiting for “Saturday Night Live” to come back in the fall. The only reason to not bring it back is if you have some other idea that you really think is head and shoulders above this.
Hopefully, NBC will make a formal decision at some point over the coming months.
