Cable ratings: ‘The Last Ship’ season 3 down; ‘Preacher’ episode 6 steady
We knew going into Sunday that it was going to be interesting to look at the cable ratings for two separate reasons. First and foremost, we were going to see how some shows withstood airing on the day before July 4, otherwise known as a time in which it is hard to draw big numbers.
However, there was an interesting trade-off in general for shows like “The Last Ship” and “Preacher,” given that the two of them would not have to air against “Game of Thrones,” otherwise known as the wrecking ball for ratings on HBO. It’s the sort of show that you really have to watch live, since otherwise you run the risk of friends spoiling it for you. In some ways, we wondered if these two factors would offset each other going into the night … and maybe they did to some extent.
For “The Last Ship,” it feels more that it was damaged by the holiday more so than “Game of Thrones,” posting (per TVbythenumbers) a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic that ties its series low. It makes some sense that the show would face a decline here, given that “The Last Ship” is in particular a fairly patriotic show that celebrates American heroes; many of its viewers are pretty likely to have partaken in some July 4 festivities early.
Meanwhile, “Preacher” continued to hold steady at around a 0.5 rating. While this show isn’t necessarily blowing the ratings out of the water, it’s decent for an AMC show in its first season, especially one that is this entertaining.

I was a faithful viewer of ‘the last ship’ during its first two seasons. When I read about the direction of the show in season 3, I decided not to watch it, as did many of my friends. Killing off Rachel, aka Rhona Mitra, was a major mistake. Of the two major characters, she, who found the cure and saved the world, brought a human element to the show. Her compassion, strength and brilliance were not lost on her fans. And, neither was the writers’ callous disregard for her death, according to various blogs.
The reason for her death, as noted by the showrunners, producers and writers, makes absolutely no sense. The complaints about the third season imply that the story has a lot of holes, and the unfortunate way in which the writers have handled this Rachel issue–and the loss of Tex, also a fan favorite–is an insult to the fans’ intelligence. And, now, that the virus has mutated, the fans are livid that she’s not part of the show.
I read the blogs because I want to know whether the writers pland to bring her back from the dead. Doesn’t look like that’s the case, so they’ve lost me and many, many others. So, so sad!!
