‘Doctor Who’ season 10: Steven Moffat on reinvention for premiere
“Doctor Who” may be a show that has existed in one form or another for over fifty years, but within the very fabric of it there has always been something that felt distinctly new and original. You get a new Doctor every few years, a new Companion around that same stretch of time, and you often do see things shifting around.
There is constantly an effort to see the show try new things, and that’s one of the reasons why it remains exciting! It never feels stale because there are always some new elements, and as executive producer Steven Moffat prepares to leave the series at the end of this upcoming tenth season. This is clearly something that he does want to leave behind. For some further news on this subject, all you have to do is look and see what he had to say in a new issue of Doctor Who Magazine:
“I want it to feel like Episode 1 of a brand new show … I want to leave just as it’s all beginning…”
With Pearl Mackie debuting in the premiere following the exit of Jenna Coleman, it does certainly feel like that particular part of the show will be different! The same could be said for the position of the Doctor himself, given that Peter Capaldi has not stated what his intent is going to be in terms of whether or not he will remain with this show. He has been an excellent Doctor, but he is aware of the shelf life; also, he is cognizant of the time commitment that this role requires. We imagine that if he has not made his choice already, he will do so in the coming months.
