‘Maya & Marty’: Drake, Jiminy Glick sit down for a chat
During the premiere of “Maya & Marty” last week, we were not altogether shocked to realize that this show was entertaining. When you’ve got two people with the talent that Martin Short and Maya Rudolph do working together, odds are that you are going to get some really entertaining stuff that happens.
Therefore, through much of the premiere, it was pretty darn easy to have an enormous smile on our face as we got a chance to see some ridiculousness, including a random Steve Martin cameo. Martin was also there tonight, but for the second straight week the highlight may be Martin’s Jiminy Glick character. It’s funny given that we don’t really think of him as one of our favorites in comedy history, but there’s something about him in this particular venue that works. It’s almost akin to Stephen Colbert’s interviewing style during the “Better Know a Distract” segment on “The Colbert Report”: He’s dogging the subjects, and doing so in a way that is wonderfully awkward.
The Glick interview tonight was between the character and Drake, and it certainly proved itself to be funny from start to finish, mostly because of Glick’s trolling and also Drake being perfectly game to be in on the joke.
Also, we think that it certainly helps that the rapper was a familiar face to the pantheon of Lorne Michaels performers. He’s hosted “Saturday Night Live,” and he knows how to handle himself in most of these situations without too much of a problem. Hats off to him for being game to go along with this.
